The Best Places to Visit in the French Basque Country
The French Basque Country is a compact region where the Atlantic coast, mountains, traditional villages, food and culture come together within a surprisingly small area. From the elegant seaside resort of Biarritz to the historic streets of Bayonne and the mountain villages around Sare and Espelette, there is much more to discover beyond the coast. If you are planning a first visit, these are some of the places I recommend including in your itinerary.

Biarritz
Biarritz is one of the best places to begin exploring the French Basque Country.
Once a small fishing village and later a famous seaside resort, Biarritz combines Belle Époque architecture, dramatic coastal scenery and a strong surfing culture.
The Rocher de la Vierge, the Grande Plage and the old port are among the essential sights, but part of Biarritz’s appeal is simply walking along the coast and taking in the ocean views.
Biarritz is also an excellent base for exploring the surrounding Basque Country.
Saint Jean de Luz
Located just south of Biarritz, Saint-Jean-de-Luz has a very different atmosphere.
Its sheltered bay, colourful fishing boats and historic town centre make it one of the most charming coastal towns in the region.
Saint-Jean-de-Luz is particularly interesting for its maritime history and Basque architecture. The town is also closely connected with French history: Louis XIV married the Infanta Maria Theresa of Spain here in 1660.
The town is easy to explore on foot, but the surrounding coastline is equally worth discovering.
Bayonne
Often overlooked by visitors heading straight to the coast, Bayonne is an essential stop for understanding the cultural identity of the French Basque Country.
The historic centre sits at the confluence of the Nive and Adour rivers and is characterised by narrow streets, colourful half-timbered houses and an impressive Gothic cathedral.
Bayonne is also famous for its gastronomy. The city is closely associated with Bayonne ham and Basque chocolate, making it an excellent place to experience some of the region’s culinary traditions.
